Mikaesque Discovery:HAFW 2018

Hey guys,

So I had the opportunity to attend this year’s Hub of Africa Addis Fashion Week’s runway show, and oh my goodness the whole experience was magical, to say the least! I have got a recap of the phenomenal show which I surely hope you guys will enjoy.

Props to Mahlet Teklemariam -the creator of Hub of Africa Fashion week in Ethiopia. A little backstory on how Hub of Africa Fashion week came to life. Back in  2009 Mahlet the got the idea to launch a fashion week here in Addis, but she didn’t want to only restrict it to Ethiopian designers, so she made it open to other African countries to participate in. The first Hub of Africa Fashion week took place in 2010, and she opted to host it every 2 years. But Mahlet perceived that hosting it every 2 years was in fact not fair neither for fashion nor for the audience. So as of 2014, it became an annual event. This year marks the 7th HAFW here in Addis Ababa.

African sourcing and fashion week(ASFW) provided an opportunity to showcase their products with a four-day exhibition while simultaneously creating a collaboration opportunity. Fashion garments, textile machinery and many more were on display in the exhibition. The runway show was hosted on the third day and served as the highlight of the entire event. ASFW is currently the biggest sourcing and fashion week exhibitor on the continent. For this year’s runway line-up 18 designers(including designers form  DRC, Kenya, Morocco and of course Ethiopia) presented their awe-inspiring collections.

Black Panther was mentioned since it has shed lots of light on African fashion this year. It was also stated that “African fashion has become important on a global scale, not just as inspiration but also in guiding as far as ethical and inclusive fashion is involved.” And I absolutely agree with this.

This year’s show was definitely well organized, and even quoted by Mahlet’s partner “probably one of the best shows so far.” The colours, the aesthetics and the line-up were coruscating! From my perspective, I can’t say anything lacked. Sure the show started a tad bit later than expected and lasted longer than intended too, yet it’s safe to say that almost everyone that came in remained in their seats for the whole thing! Photographing the images and taking in what was being presented before me was an incredible experience.

For the set up there were two catwalks with the audience’s seats on both sides of the catwalk. The catwalk where I was shooting from was where the models would walk towards me, then they’d make a U-turn and display what our area had seen to the other side, and vice versa happened from their end. While I was busy shooting the model coming towards me, I got to look at what was being displayed through my camera lens, whereas with the model coming from the other side I was able to have a good 15 seconds to view her outfit properly with my eyes till it was time to shoot again.

Observing the audience’s reactions was something I also did during the short 15-second intermission between shoots. There was also a face reveal of the designers at the end of each segment. It’s great to see that there is a major variety amongst these inspirational designers behind these gorgeous lines. It’s good to see that designing isn’t limited to a specific age group as it was supposedly assumed to be back in the days.

Going home with all the clothes I saw that day would have been the dream, but close enough I got to take photos to share with you all and also get to look back on at any given time.  It’s honestly so great that fashion week is gaining more and more recognition. Fashion week has been going on in the West since 1943. Designers get to send the message that there’s more to clothes than wearing and buying them. Actually seeing the clothes on people right before your eyes rather than on mannequins is something worth experiencing for any fashion enthusiast.

Let me highlight a  few things I enjoyed doing throughout the show. Trying to envision what I’d wear what outfit with. Trying to figure out what story that outfit carried. From being designed, to being sewn to being worn.  Wondering whether the outfit we just saw was a yay or a nay for the spectators. Almost every outfit was a yay for me, as for the nay’s it was a matter of “I can’t rock that” not a matter of the outfit lacking anything design wise. Like I have continuously stated in this post, every single piece was dazzling! Fashion is a very versatile, you can alter a certain outfit to your liking/preference, but at the risk of lowering the original/authentic style and revamping the story behind the outfit. For me, if an outfit calls for me, it just does. And I’ll wear that outfit without making adjustments to the authentic style. I’m not a huge fan of getting clothes alterations done.

Anywho that’s it for my recap and review of the runway show. Now let me present the pictures of all 18 designer’s collections. Enjoy!
